Every year, millions of people set goals. And every year, 92% of them fail. That's not because people lack motivation or willpower — it's because most goal-setting advice is fundamentally flawed.
I used to be part of that 92%. I'd write ambitious goals in January, feel motivated for a week or two, then completely forget about them by March. Sound familiar?
Everything changed when I discovered a better framework. Here's what actually works.
Why Most Goals Fail
Before we fix the problem, let's understand it. Goals typically fail for three reasons:
- They're too vague: "Get healthier" isn't a goal, it's a wish
- They're too big: Giant goals without milestones feel overwhelming
- They're not connected to WHY: Without emotion, motivation fades
The SMART+ Goal Framework
You've probably heard of SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). But I add two more elements that make goals actually stick:
SMART+ Goals
Step-by-Step Goal Setting Process
Dream big first
Write down everything you want without filtering. Don't worry about "realistic" yet.
Choose 1-3 priority goals
Pick the goals that would make the biggest impact on your life right now.
Make them SMART+
Transform vague wishes into specific, measurable targets with emotional connection.
Break into monthly milestones
Divide your annual goal into 12 monthly checkpoints.
Create weekly actions
List the specific actions you'll take each week toward your goal.
Review weekly
Spend 10 minutes every Sunday reviewing progress and adjusting.
Goal Transformation Examples
| Vague Goal | SMART+ Goal |
|---|---|
| "Save more money" | "Save $6,000 by December 31 by automatically transferring $500/month to my HYSA" |
| "Get fit" | "Run a 5K in under 30 minutes by June by running 3x/week" |
| "Read more" | "Read 24 books this year (2/month) by reading 20 pages every morning" |
| "Start a business" | "Launch my Etsy shop with 10 products by March 31 and make my first sale" |

The secret weapon of goal-achievers is the weekly review. Every Sunday, spend 10 minutes asking:
- What did I accomplish this week toward my goal?
- What didn't go as planned? Why?
- What will I do differently next week?
- What are my top 3 priorities for next week?
This simple habit keeps goals top of mind and allows for course correction.
The Bottom Line
Goal setting isn't about writing wishes on paper and hoping for the best. It's about creating a clear vision, breaking it into actionable steps, and reviewing progress regularly.
Start with 1-3 goals maximum. Make them SMART+. Break them down. Review weekly. That's it.
